Eternals Footage Shows Angelia Jolie’s Thena Suffering From Dementia

New footage from Eternals offers a closer look at Angelina Jolie’s Thena as suffers from a form of dementia known as Mahd Wy’ry from the comics.

New Eternals footage shows Thena suffering from dementia. Played by Angelina Jolie, the character is among the 10 main Eternals that will debut in Academy Award-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao’s upcoming Marvel Studios film. As part of Disney ramping up the marketing for the blockbuster, new spots are regularly released leading to the project’s premiere in a few weeks.

Jolie is joined by a star-studded ensemble that includes Richard Madden as Ikaris, Lauren Ridloff as Makkari, Brian Tyree Henry as Phastos, Salma Hayek as Ajak, Lia McHugh as Sprite, Don Lee as Gilgamesh, Kumail Nanjiani as Kingo, Gemma Chan as Sersi, and Barry Keoghan as Druig. Announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, Eternals has been delayed multiple times due to the coronavirus pandemic. Unlike WandaVision and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, however, its production wrapped up before the global health scare spread. The Eternals are created by the Celestials and were sent to Earth to protect humanity from Deviants. That means that they’ve been in existence for thousands of years, but they haven’t revealed their true selves yet to the world — until now.

Thena is one of the prolific fighters in the Eternals team. While she’s obviously very skilled and powerful, there’s one problem — she’s suffering some form of memory loss condition known as Mahd Wy’ry from Marvel Comics. Not much is known about what caused this and how exactly it hampers her ability, but in new footage from Eternals via Eternals News on Twitter, she’s seen fighting Gilgamesh, despite them being partners and long-time teammates.

In the comics, Sersi suffered the same disease after an alternate version of Black Knight forces her to attack Earth multiple times. It’s worth noting that Kit Harington’s Dane Whitman, who will also be introduced in Eternals, is confirmed to eventually became Black Knight in the MCU moving forward. That being said, don’t expect this plotline to play out on the big screen, as it seems like Marvel Studios has already given Thena a similar arc in the upcoming narrative. The good news is, there’s a cure for Mahd Wy’ry — at least in print. However, it entails killing its sufferer and then resurrecting them through a backup. It’s curious if this will be a viable option in the MCU, but this certainly increases the dramatic stakes for characters who are supposedly immortals.

With only a few weeks to go before Eternals hits theaters, fans won’t have to wait that long to learn more about Thena’s condition. Jolie previously said that she’s not particularly fond of superhero films, but accepted the MCU role because she thought it was different. Playing someone who’s all-powerful and yet, still suffering from something like memory loss might be something that appealed to the prolific actress. It adds a twist to your typical superhero arc and could result in some really heartwrenching moments for her.
